Enhanced Wake Sub Committee

Educate Yourself and Provide Feedback

Hello Lake Keesus Residents,

We ask for your participation as property owners to complete a survey regarding your opinion of the impact wake surfing and wake enhanced boat activity has on Lake Keesus. The goal of the survey is to solicit your input to guide the Wake Enhancement Committee in their recommendations to the Lake Keesus Management District (LKMD) Board, who will make decisions regarding wake surfing activities that may impact the lake now and into the future.  Your responses must be received by March 31, 2025.

Background Information

  • Wake surfing on inland lakes has been a topic of discussion across not only our lake but also the entire State. A discussion began at the July 2023 LKMD meeting related to prohibiting wake surfing on Lake Keesus.

  • Opinions were presented at subsequent LKMD meetings

    • Presentations were made by 2 Wisconsin-based environmentally focused groups.  They presented results of studies and results of what is occurring on other lakes like Lake Keesus.  These organizations favor prohibiting wake surfing and wake enhancement on Lake Keesus and other lakes of our size/type.

    • Lake Keesus resident wake surfers presented studies and also a video they created showing a shoreline wave height comparison (wake surfing at 200ft full ballast vs. tubing at 100ft with empty ballast) to favor wake surfing and wake enhancement to counter the claims made by the above organizations.

  • During this timeframe, the Lake Keesus wake surfing community created voluntary guidelines (listed below) to follow during the Summer of 2024 and into the future.

  • In 2023, WI Senate Bill 680 and WI Assembly Bill 656 were introduced regarding the topic of wake enhanced activities on inland lakes.  Both bills failed to pass in 2024.  New bills have not been introduced in 2025.

Lake Keesus Wakesurfing Guidelines

Current Volunteer Guidelines Followed by our Wake Boat Owners on Lake Keesus (started Summer 2024)

  • When surfing, keep AT LEAST 200’ from shore

  • Surf in depths of 20’ or more

  • When surfing between North and Marshall Bays:

    • Stay to the center of the channel

    • Whenever possible, have only 1 surf boat passing through channel

    • Don’t purposely stop in the channel, wait until you are in a larger bay to drop your surfer

  • When surfing in North and Marshall Bays:

    • Follow pattern in map below when there are multiple boats surfing

    • If you are the only boat surfing, stay closer to the center

  • General respect for others on the lake (these are true for anyone on the water)

    • State law is to be at least 100’ from other boats, whenever possible give as much distance as is reasonable to other boats

    • Keep your music at a responsible level

    • Always pay attention to your surroundings
